Unexpected Signs of Burnout

When most of us picture burnout, we imagine someone collapsing at their desk or crying in the car before a shift. Sometimes it looks like that. More often, the signs of burnout are quieter and much easier to explain away.

In my work with adults across Whitby and Durham Region, I hear the same thing again and again: "I didn't realize that was burnout." If something has felt off for you lately, here are six unexpected signs of burnout worth paying attention to.

1. You Can't Switch Off, Even When You Finally Can

You've been counting down to the weekend, and now it's here. Yet your mind keeps racing through your inbox, and lying on the couch feels strangely uncomfortable. When rest starts to feel like work, your nervous system may be stuck on high alert. You're not bad at relaxing. Your body has simply forgotten that it's safe to slow down.

2. Tiny Decisions Feel Enormous

What should I make for dinner? Should I answer that text now or later? If everyday choices leave you frozen or close to tears, you may be dealing with decision fatigue. Burnout drains the mental energy we rely on to weigh our options, so even simple questions can start to feel like too much.

3. You Keep Getting Sick

Another cold, another headache, another week of feeling run down. Chronic stress can wear down your immune system over time. If you're catching every bug that makes its way through the office or your kids' school, your body may be asking for more than a bowl of soup and an early night.

4. You're Short With the People You Love

Maybe you're patient and professional all day, then snap at your partner over a dish left in the sink. Irritability is one of the most overlooked signs of burnout. When you're running on empty, there's less left over for the people closest to you. It doesn't mean you love them any less. It means you're depleted.

5. The Things You Used to Love Feel Flat

Your favourite hobby, a walk along the Whitby waterfront, coffee with a good friend. Suddenly none of it sounds appealing. This emotional numbness is easy to mistake for laziness or boredom. More often, it's a sign that your energy has been stretched too thin for too long.

6. Your Memory Feels Foggy

Walking into a room and forgetting why. Rereading the same email three times. Missing an appointment you'd never normally forget. Brain fog is one of the most common signs of burnout, and it's very real. Ongoing stress affects focus and memory, so if your mind feels like it's wading through mud, you're not imagining it.

You Don't Have to Wait for a Breaking Point

If a few of these signs of burnout sound familiar, please hear this: you don't need to hit rock bottom to deserve support. Noticing these patterns early is a gift, and burnout is very treatable. For people of colour, we experience burnout differently. Read more about it here.
